This weekend, from the 27th to 29th January 2012, Torrevieja plays host to the Fifth International Children’s Optimist Trophy Race.

Optimist is a form of racing which takes its name from the sailing vessels designed for children aged from 6 to 14 years.  It is a boat light enough that it only takes one person to sail and for this reason is usually the first boat used by a beginner to the sport.

This event is important because it marks the start of the International Circuit of the Excellence Cup 2012, acompetition which involves 5 trials in different Spanish ports: Torrevieja, Palamós, Vigo, Palma de Mallorca and Gran Canaria.  During the trials Torrevieja will be home to over 300 young sailors and 50 coaches from over 13 different countries.

This weekend definately warrants a trip to thePortofTorreviejato witness this magnificent event and watch the horizon fill will sails as hundreds of boats compete in the open seas.  If the weather permits, which it usually does, you can also take in a few hours of sunshine!
