20 representatives of TM were given the opportunity to enjoy and appreciate the energy and enthusiasm of this truly amazing speaker, Emilio Duró, who is already a phenomenon in Spain on Youtube and the web in general.

“You need to put the passion back into your life,” is one of his most famous and most repeated phrases, as he believes that you only become bored or unmotivated by things you no longer feel passionate about.  Mr. Duró stresses that the “belief in optimism” is essential in people as those who are more optimistic and face life with an optimistic outlook always obtain better results than those who do not.

He also revealed that the “key to happiness” rests in four important points:

• FIRST – Take care of your body as it will accompany you throughout your life.
• SECOND – Express emotions: kissing, hugging, dancing, singing etc.
• THIRD – Read as much as possible to learn new things and improve our cultural understanding
• FOURTH – Be supportive to others.  Helping someone gives us a lot of happiness.

Following his speech, Emilio Duró left the audience with a great tip to allow them to start living with more optimism and enthusiasm – “A habit takes 21 days to internalise,” he said.  “If every morning you say to yourself – today is going to be a great day – on the 22nd day you will feel that it really is a great day.”

The hotel chain, famous for the sail-shaped Hotel Burj Al Arab, regarded as the most luxurious hotel on the planet (see photo) runs luxury hotels across the globe, including in cities such as Dubai, Maldives, Shanghai, New York, London and Frankfurt, and have now set their sights firmly on Mallorca.

Jumeirah is part of Dubai Holding, a state run investment fund, and as such is owned by Sheikh Mohamed Al Rashid bin Maktoum, United Arab Emirates Vice President and Prime Minister of Dubai.  The business model is simple: “To each hotel we bring our experience in brand management, hotel operations and our international sales network, ensuring that we make the hotel as profitable as possible,” explained a spokesman.

The prioirty of the company is equally simple: “managing hotels in the prime destinations throughout the world,” and define these desirable locations as “places which have the capacity to support a large five star hotel or luxury resort and attract tourists from the most profitable market segments.”

A strong complement for Mallorca, which the company has chosen as the perfect location for its latest hotel, the Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel & Spa.  Nestled in the Bay of Sóller, on the North-western coast of Mallorca, it will be the only hotel the company is planning for Spain.  “We are focused on a successful launch for this hotel in Mallorca” said a spokesman.

Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel in Mallorca

As part of celebrations for World Wetlands Day, which this time aims to link these natural industries with tourism, architect Maria Victoria Bernicola presented her proposal dubbed “Dancing with Vineyards”, a project based on architecture integrated with its natural surroundings and committed to helping revitalise wine tourism in the Natural Park of La Mata.

Dancing with Vineyards aims to enhance local economic development though regeneration of the surrounding landscape, tourism and increasing the production and marketing of La Mata wines which have recently broken into the American wine market.  The project also plans to establish touristic routes and activities so that visitors to the area, together with people from the nearby towns and villages, can discover for themselves both the Nature Park, its beautiful landscapes and the areas wine making heritage.

The project also calls for the connection of the vineyards around La Mata to the beach via pedestrian and cycling routes which will allow visitors to easily explore the protected nature park and surrounding area.  According to the proposal, this new route would run parallel to the canal which was built originally to fill La Mata lagoon, together with a new pedestrian area along the N-332 road.

Those attending the presentation at La Mata Nature Park were also given the opportunity to discover the vineyards for themselves as they followed the areas “wine route”.  On a guided tour, they were taken for a stroll through the various local vineyards, together with a chance to chat with experts about how wine is produced, the traditional process involved, the grapes themselves and the history of wine making in La Mata.

Planting crops while building homes

TM Real Estate Group has invested over 1.2 Million Euros over the last two years to bring 312 hectares of its land portfolio into agricultural production.

TM Real Estate Group, one of the leading holiday home builders in the Valencian region, is not a company known to be found with its arms folded.  Two years ago, facing bleak prospects for the holiday home market in Spain, decided to achieve something productive with its immense land portfolio.  Instead of new houses the company used some of its land to plant artichockes; lemons; onions; broccoli; oranges and lettuce over 312 hectares (more than three million square metres) spread around the Spanish towns of Almoradi, Los Montesinos and Murcia.

This doesn´t mean that the company has given up on building, quite the contrary.  TM, based in Torrevieja on the Spanish Costa Blanca, is one of the few builders who have survived the building sector “crash”, thanks to inventive “diversification” such as farming.  While the company continues to build and sell quality homes in Alicante, Almeria, Murcia and the Balearic Islands, together with international projects on the coast of Mexico and Brazil, the company is also producing about two million kilos of citrus fruit and other farming crops destined for various distributors including Mercadona, a leading Spanish supermarket chain.

This new “diversification” for the company offers good results and also creates employment, two “resounding reasons in these difficult times” for continuing to work and promote “competitiveness in agriculture”, as explains a company spokesman.  The main farming operation is based at Las Moreras Farm, halfway between the towns of Almoradi and Los Montesinos, covering 198 hectares.  “Through varying the citrus fruit produced and resource optimisation, this new business model is becoming increasingly more attractive,” explained the spokesman.

In an area of 107 hectares, TM cultivates 30,000 trees offering various types of mandarins (Oronules and Nova); oranges (Navelate, Barnfield and Powell) and lemons (Fino and Verna), which will soon grow to over 50,000 trees with the addition of grapefruit.

During the last two years of “farming dedication”, TM Real Estate Group has invested approximately 1.2 Million Euros in “resource optimisation and adaption to European legislation which will allow us to achieve a higher yield per hectare and crops of a better quality.”

In addition, the farm has another 90 hectares leased out to third-party companies for the cultivation of vegetables such as arti

chokes – the star crop at the moment in gardens across the Vega Baja area as it is one of the few crops which not only covers production costs but also generates profits – including the installation of a water desalination plant producing 1,000 cubic metres per day, storage for 200,000 cubic metres of water and an irrigation system designed to save water.  In addition to Las Moreras Farm, TM also operates another farm in Murcia – El Carmolí near to Cartagena – which has 60 hectares dedicated to the production of melon in summer and lettuce in winter.
At La Juliana Farm (Almoradi), TM has leased a further 55 hectaresfor the production of onions destined for Spanish supermarket chains like Mercadona.  For TM, the land was bought with the idea to produce quality homes, as is the tradition of TM Real Estate Group, but while the company is occupied developing its current projects along the Costa Blanca, Costa Almeria and Mallorca, turning to farming as a means of generating profit from its land bank seemed like the perfect idea.

It´s not that TM have turned their back on building, they simply saw an opportunity to take advantage of the land they have in stock and turn them to profit while awaiting the inevitable recovery of the Spanish construction industry.

Average spending per tourist was around 934 Euros, with daily spending rising to 102 Euros, an increase of 4.6% compared to 2010.

The UK and Germany led the way, with tourists from these countries spending 10,377 Million (up 2.1%) and 8,699 Million Euros respectively.  Those who had increased the highest in spending were Scandinavian and French tourists, with increases of 10.1% and 12.8% respectively.

Spanish newspaper El Mundo reported that the countries which had contributed most to this boost in tourist spending were Japan, the United Kingdom, Scandinavia and Switzerland.
